The 6 Best Coloring Book Apps for Kids

It’s no secret that young children have a lot of energy. Coloring can be a great outlet for your child to focus their energy and use their creativity. But you can’t always bring coloring books and various drawing utensils with you.

Luckily, there are coloring apps you can download on a smartphone or tablet! Then, if you’re shopping or stuck in traffic, you can load up your smartphone or your child’s tablet with colorful apps. They’ll keep you entertained with the task at hand, and let you focus on what you need to do.

1. Coloring Games: Color and Paint

Coloring Games offers six unique ways for your child to color. On the Home screen, you can select your preferred coloring method, including Fun Paint, Color Fill, Drawing, Glow Pen, Number Paint, and Water Art.

Both the Fun Paint and Color Fill categories provide your child with a picture to color, and they can choose between unique drawing utensils and colors to create their own art. Alternatively, the Drawing and Glow Pen categories start with a blank slate, allowing your child to create anything their imagination puts them through.

Number Paint is a great tool if your child is learning their numbers and colors. They would see a basic image with numbers on each large segment, and then a corresponding marker to the right with a number on it. This category is like a paint-by-number kit for adults.

Finally, water art is a neat category for little kids who haven’t fully understood the process of coloring yet. There’s an image on the screen, and all you have to do is drag your finger across the display to reveal the watercolor picture.

2. Bimi Boo Colors

The only free part of Bimi Boo’s coloring app is the Animals section, which has 15 different pictures to color. All other categories—including Fairy Tales, Underwater, and Dinosaurs—are priced at $1.99 each, the same as physical coloring books. Or you can spend $7.99 to unlock everything in the app, including extra colors for the drawing tools.

There are seven unique drawing utensils including a marker, a pencil, a paintbrush, a spray can, a paint can, a sparkly marker, and a patterned marker. You have free access to all the colors of markers and pencils, but the other five pots only provide three colors for free.

3. Riafy Technologies Coloring

Similar to the Bimi Boo app above, this coloring book app also only offers animals category for free, with a total of 19 pictures to color. However, to unlock any other category in this app from Riafy Technologies, it is a one-time fee of $34.99.

Each image comes with a recommended color palette and a completion percentage to know how much color you have left before the picture is officially ready to go to the art gallery. Each picture uses a fill-color technique where you tap your favorite color and then the section of the image you want to fill.

4. Coloring Book Games

There are a few different tabs to explore in this coloring book app. At the bottom of the screen are Easy and Hard tabs with simple coloring pages, though the options in the Hard section are more complex. Each of these sections also has a blank page where your child can simply draw their own picture.

Then, guess what? section that hides all images behind a question mark until you tap to open it and see what it is. The Glow category contains images with outlines that you trace with a glowing marker to make cool pictures. And finally, there’s a greetings section where your child can color birthday cards, get well cards, and so on for someone special.

5. Kids Coloring Book

This is one of the best freestyle coloring apps for your child. Many coloring apps let you simply tap an area of the picture to color in the entire section. While you can do that in this app, you can also choose the paintbrush and just move your finger where you want to paint. It provides more authentic coloring experience to your baby.

Categories for choosing coloring pages include letters, animals, fruits, numbers, planets, dinosaurs, patterns, and shapes. If your child is currently learning numbers, shapes or letters, this is a great way to keep them entertained while they learn. There’s tons of free content in this app, but if you want even more, you can upgrade to the full version for just $0.99.

If you’re at home and you think your child would enjoy coloring a physical picture, check out one of these coloring websites that let you print out a coloring page.
